What are layers?

Layers act like a number of transparent sheets , laying the sheets on top of each other and then copying those sheets to produce a final image. Where no image data has been placed onto a layer, you can see through to any other visible layers. Layers enable you to edit specific areas of your image without affecting data on other layers.

(1) Layer hiding button

To hide a layer, click on the eye icon.

(2) Layer deleting button

To delete a layer, click on the trash can icon.

(3) Layer hiding button (for animation)

To hide a layer during an animation, click on the A-shaped eye icon.

(4) New layer creating button

To create a new layer, click on the new sheet icon.

(5) Thumbnail of a layer

This area shows thumbnail image about the layer in the current image.

(6) Blending mode of a layer

You can alter the blending mode of a layer by using this button. Blending modes specify how pixels in one layer are blended with pixels on underlying layers. AND mode removes the lighter parts of the base color, thus darkening the color.

(7) Preserving transparency button

You can preserve a layer's transparency by using this button. Preserving a layer's transparency limits image editing to areas of a layer that already contain pixels.

(8) Opacity slider

You can change the opacity of a layer with this slider. Opacity refers to how much of an image beneath a layer is visible through that layer.

(9) Order changing buttons

To change the order of the selected layer, click on these up and down arrow buttons.

(10) Layer joining button

By using this joining button, you can merge two layers together.

(11) Layer duplicating button

To duplicate a layer, click on this copy button.
